Quiet Transition

"The quiet transition from autumn to winter is not a bad time at all. It’s a time for protecting and securing things and for making sure you’ve got in as many supplies as you can. It’s nice to gather together everything you possess as close to you as possible, to store up your warmth and your thoughts and burrow yourself into a deep hole inside, a core of safety where you can defend what is important and precious and your very own. Then the cold and the storms and the darkness can do their worst. They can grope their way up the walls looking for a way in, but they won’t find one, everything is shut, and you sit inside, laughing in your warmth and your solitude, for you have had foresight." - Tove Jansson

They say this time of year brings on clouds of somber above us all. Maybe it's the cold, windy weather, or the early setting sun with longer, darker nights that deepen these gloomy days. I admit to having the common case of winter blues, but this year I'll use it as a remedy of awakened insight. The end of the year is a time of isolation and security--shrinking into my emotional core, the way the body wanes into itself to absorb enough warmth against the cold. A final pursuit of self reverence before embarking on another year of new journeys. Filling the cracks and fastening the kinks of my foundation before building skyscrapers of undiscovered passions. Refreshing my path and reinventing my innovation to reflect the lessons and mistakes collected throughout the year and using them as a security blanket, sheltering me from the fresh, cold air of newness--the way the untouched side of the bed feels before you roll over to its territory.

So if this personal time of hibernation means more evenings spent getting lost in novels, writing out my mind's diary away, or even challenging myself to greater creative bounds, then I'll take every solitude moment I can get with open embrace and warm welcomes. I want to learn who I am again. I want to learn it and I want to own it because once the new year rolls in, a more secure and certain me will take on 2016.
